Documentary Title Research & Development
This is my research & development for my crime documentary title

These are the potential titles that we had for our crime documentary, at first we agreed on "Deception" as it captures betrayal and deceit from her best friend. This is also such a powerful word to conveys the theme of dishonesty, two-faced, and murder involved in hidden agenda. However, during our editing process we came up with the name "Me, Her, & Him" as it hints at the dynamic and complexities of our plot where there is a triangular relationship between the character. Moreover, we also think that this title would intrigue audiences more as they would be questioning the roles and relationship among the 3 people. This ambiguity if effective in drawing the audiences in and keeping them engaged with our opening.
Reflection: Picking title for our documentary doesn't take a long time or process as it is easy to come up with new title ideas as we go by. I also ended up liking our title "Me, Her, & Him" due to it focuses more into the relationship of the characters rather than being direct and forewarning. It also creates ambiguity and depths as it doesn't give away too much and more delving into the psychological and emotional factors contributed to the story.

Thumbnail Research + Development
This is my thumbnail research and development for my crime documentary project
Research
Firstly, I look for thumbnail inspiration in Netflix and noticed some conventions that film maker used when creating the thumbnail. One of them that stood out the most is the mise-en-scene, the uses of dim or using dark lighting. I believe, this is an effective way for drawing attention to serious subject matter and to imply danger, terror, and mystery.
The text being used is also mostly in bold and capital letters to ensure that it catches the viewers eyes even amidst another content. It also creates a sense of branding which ensures that audiences are aware of the crime documentary and both the thumbnail and the documentary use visual similarities to reinforce the crime theme. It can also emphasize a sense of urgency and importance where it is visually commanding thus compelling the audiences to pay attention to the information. Moreover, crime documentary also often uses desaturated dark colors or monochrome images to create a sense of ambiguity, where details are present but not fully revealed. This can heighten the sense of mystery or suspense, encouraging viewers to watch the documentary to uncover the truth behind the blurred or obscured details.
Moreover, the crime documentary thumbnail also usually covers or blurred the image of the main character in the to imply mystery and creates hermeneutic codes for the audiences. Additionally, crime documentary opening also mostly features lots red color which symbolizes danger, courage, and anger. The camera shots and angles also they all uses direct mode of address which speaks directly to the audiences and it is a technique to construct an emotional bond, and promotes a real relationship between the audiences and the text. It also enhances the interest of the reader as it directly talks with them. The thumbnail covering the eyes also connotes a there is a hidden meaning which the audiences needs to decode from the image.
Here are the 2 documentaries that fascinated me and my team mates. First one is What Jennifer Did (2024) it uses split face imagery of the same person but showing two different expressions, this symbolizes the dual personality or character of the person especially from the contrast color, with the right ones being red washed and the left one is more natural colored which conveys happiness and purity. Additionally, the visual textures also resembles a distressed or aged photograph this creates realism contributing to potentially a disturbing or unsettelling narratives. However, me and my team couldn't use this since our crime documentary is about 2 best friends whilst this thumbnail only covered a person. While the Ice Cold documentary has lots of textual elements which is like a news paper clippings and legal document. This visual helps creates a sense of controversy and public scrutiny.
Me and my team mates also agreed that this version of Ice Cold thumbnail is also great and really similar to what we wanted to make as it covered 2 best friends in polaroid frame. The uses of monochrome color also supports our conventions that contrasts to the joyful smiles in the polaroid picture which hints the audiences that there is something underneath the smiles and happiness of both characters. Moreover, again with the uses of capital letters for the title in white color makes it standout against the monochrome background.

This development is made by my team mates (Audrey)
Self Reflection: This reflection is made by Audrey, however, I also contributed by giving feedbacks on how the thumbnail should look like and give ideas on the color grading, typography, and the main image. I think doing the development consumes lots of time as we need to record every single changes that we made and me and my team mates also make several designs for the thumbnail and having a hard time choosing them. Despite that, I learned mostly in the development process on how we can create thumbnail that satisfied our audiences and in line with our target audiences.

This is my editing process for my crime documentary opening
This editing is done by Chelsea
Self Reflection: This editing process was made by Chelsea, it was very unfortunate since we were excited due to our editing platform could do collaborative edit, however, it couldn't actually worked and require only one person to edit at a time. Due to this, we as a group decided to be in a zoom call together to discuss any changes that we should make, potential soundtracks to use, editing techniques, and all. This process was actually very challenging and took a very long time as the changes can only be done with one laptop. Additionally, with issues like subtitles changes their size according to the length of the sentences is a small obstacle however my team mate need to adjust every single one manually which is quite a difficulty. Despite that, editing is fun when we have figured out what edits and soundtracks we should use and just experimenting with it but its quite a hassle since we really need to focus alot on the details, audience expectations, and revisions.

Self reflection: This storyboard is created by team mates Audrey (first half) and Chelsea (Last half). However, I participated through the development or brainstorming process contributing on how the overall plot will go and continuity on how the scenes would progress. I also recommended on what the character should do or behave like as I make the statement of Intent so I am familiar with my target audiences. Moreover, I also take part on giving feedbacks on the camera angles and movements to make the crime doc realistic and professional. On top of that, contributed to writing and refining the script, suggesting dialogue as it shapes how the story is told and how the key messages are conveyed to the audiences. Furthermore, me and my teammates contributed equally on the script writing with structuring the narrative together when introducing the victim, to her online relationship, until the events leading to her death.
Statement of Intent
This is my statement of intent for my documentary opening project
Self reflection: This Statement of Intent has been a crucial factor in helping me create my opening crime documentary project, as it provides a sense of clarity and focus, especially regarding my primary target audiences. Personalizing my content to meet the interests and needs of both primary and secondary audiences, by considering their demographic and psychographic traits, has helped me develop a story that will resonate with them. Moreover, Statements of Intent are important for avoiding content sensitivity. Since my crime documentary portrays teenagers from a specific race and addresses issues such as online dating, it is important to handle these topics delicately and appropriately to ensure that my team and I avoid offending any group. This approach allows us to make the documentary both effective and respectful by recognizing potentially triggering issues and exercising caution with the content we create. Additionally, the Statement of Intent helped us identify the message and impact. By emphasizing the importance of online safety and the dangers of toxic relationships, we clearly defined our dominant reading, giving the documentary's narrative clear direction. It also helped us shape the characters' personalities and choose appropriate settings, adding depth and meaning to the story and making the experience interesting and engaging for our audience.

Risk Assessment and Location Scout
This is my Risk Assessment and Location Scout for my crime doc project
Self reflection: This risk assessment has helped me a lot to identifies potential risks that we might encounter in our way when shooting especially we shoot in different locations which includes indoor and outdoor and they both have different risk assessment. Not only that this risk assessments also boost our resource allocation and made us bring props or materials that we might needed due to emergency situations, for example when shooting in the beach (outdoor) the wind might be too harsh or the weather might be scorching hot so we make it mandatory for our casts to bring their hat and an outer to prevent them from having sickness. Moreover, it also improves our planning since we developed strategies and action plan to manage the risks effectively in order for our shooting session to go smoothly without any intervention or even fatal injuries.

Research Documentary
Here is all of my research for my crime documentary opening project
First of all before I delve deeply on how crime documentaries are being made and how does it affect the audiences, I researched on what is crime documentary and the general knowledge about it. Based on a site from Edusites GCSE these are the conventions that would create a good crime documentary.
Below is a list of conventions applied to Documentary film making – it must be remembered that not all conventions apply to all film texts:
- Hand held Camera - encoding realism and ‘truth’
- Narrative Voice Over - leading the audience into a preferred reading
- Vox Pops and Interviews with experts / witnesses / participants
- Often a shorter running time than non-fiction feature films
- Intercutting / Parallel Editing linking key scenes
- Use of Archive footage to support filmed scenes
- Surveillance (information) decoded by audience (e.g. about McDonalds in Supersize Me)
- Mediated culture – documentaries select and construct, thus encoding opinion and subjectivity
- Selective editing crucial to constructing meaning
- Often point of view with encoded ideology, preferred meaning
- Use of Establishing Shot and Close Up
- Observational, Interactive, Reflexive, Expository in format
- 3 act structure, closed investigative narrative

This documentary would be classified as sport-crime documentary, it shows mostly about the overcrowding and people forcing access without tickets to watch once in a lifetime football game.
2. Who is the largest audience?
Football fans / sports enthusiasts in general mostly young-adults or adults that is really interested with the homecoming of England football team.
3. What typical documentary conventions were used?
Non-diegetic suspenseful sound, through interviews being shown, shot of the location (establishing shot).
4. Did this opening conform or subvert the conventions for this genre?
Conform as it starts with establishing shot of the stadium and it shows the location where the action is taken place giving audiences an immediate understanding of the topic.
5. How does it create suspense using the following:
- camera: Quick cuts, which emphasize pace and energy on how excited the people are going into the stadium.
-sound: Non-diegetic sound of scores that is building tension
-mise-en-scene: there is a clip with CCTV footage which shows the uncontrollable crowds.
-edit: Dissolving, to show connection between scenes usually in the setting then changes place when someone is having an interview.
6. What parts of the opening did you find inspiring?
The establishing shot of the landscape, anecdote of the location then blank screen with the title of the documentary.

Thriller and murder documentary
2. Who is the largest audience?
People who are fascinated with thriller or horror movie and enjoyed watching mystery that slowly reveals the truth about a deep or hidden secrets.
3. What typical documentary conventions were used?
establishing shot of the house, narrators voice (ND sound of the victim talking), drones overall setting, pictures being shown to highlight mysteries and create hermeneutic codes.
4. Did this opening conform or subvert the conventions for this genre?
Establishing shot of the house, which familiarized audiences of where the scene is taking place and it also starts with an anecdote from the main character that is non-diegetic sound which creates mystery and anticipation.

The clip uses establishing shot of the house to gives information about the setting and where the event is taking place at to let the audience be familiar with the surroundings, moreover, narrators voice (ND sound of the victim talking), drones overall setting, pictures being shown in quick cuts to highlight mysteries and create hermeneutic codes.

4. Did this opening conform or subvert the conventions for this genre?

Psychological Thriller Enthusiasts: viewers who enjoy psychological tension and character-driven narratives will find this film appealing due to its focus on the protagonist's mental and emotional challenges.
3. What typical documentary conventions were used?
Music and scores, soundtrack often includes tense, minimalistic music that underscores the film’s emotional and dramatic moments. The score’s use is sparing but effective, heightening key scenes and intensifying the suspense.
4. Did this opening conform or subvert the conventions for this genre?
Conforms, The film uses a claustrophobic and confined setting—the call center—to build tension. This mirrors the genre’s convention of using limited spaces to enhance suspense and create a sense of entrapment.
However, there is also a reason why this trailer could subvert the convention of a documentary because instead of relying on physical action sequences or visual spectacles, the film prioritizes dialogue and verbal exchanges.
5. How does it create suspense using the following:
- camera: the film frequently uses close-up shots of Officer Joe Baylor’s face, capturing his reactions and emotions with intense detail.
-sound: Mostly depending on ND sound with the uses of a minimalistic diegetic sound of a fast pacing thrilling scores to prepare the audiences with what is going to happen.
-mise-en-scene: Dim lighting, in an office which shows how serious the condition is, plenty of computers and other devices that has to do with the police and investigating cases.
-edit: Plenty of dissolved scenes to indicate that a time has passed between the two scenes. Moreover, montage cuts is being used to show the rapid succession of images and scenes quickly which conveys a sense of urgency and intensity, mirroring the high-stakes and fast-paced nature of the emergency response depicted in the film.
6. What parts of the opening did you find inspiring?
Opening of the documentary starts with a chaotic mise-en-scene which prepares the audiences to the unfolding scenarios and lots of close ups being used to really pictured the details such as headphones, computer screen filled with codes and information, and also close ups of the actor's eyes which shows the emotion and intensity of the scenes.

I added this to my research because the technical elements in this documentary really inspires me as it really captures the audiences attention with their uses of establishing shot at first and interviews which builds suspense by introducing intriguing perspective and clues about the crime. This way, it often leaves the audiences with questions and makes them intrigued to watch the documentary. Moreover, this documentary also uses great technical elements such as the uses of ND thrilling and build up scores which really emphasize the emotional impact as it can evoke fear or anxiety while intensifying the drama of the documentary. Additionally, this documentary is also great at building tension such as the uses of gradually increasing the volume of the documentary and this creates a sense of urgency and can make an investigative or dramatic scenes more impactful.
2. Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S12 E5
I added this to my research since it also supports the stereotypes of crime documentary movie with fast paced opening and quick cuts mostly being used in the scenes to conveys urgency and tension and this is usually used to keep viewers at the edge of their seats as this technique helps to hold the audiences interest and prevent the narrative from being boring.
Moreover, as I researched deeply on how to create a great opening crime documentary, my research revealed that a documentary film consists of the following five elements: (John Corner)
1. mise-en-scene: to provide viewers a clear understanding of a message through lighting, props, and nonverbal cues.
2. Interviews: these are essential for establishing how the audience feels toward the subject matter and verifying the opinions presented in the movie.
3. Dramatization: Use ND sound to heighten the suspense around the crime and help establish the scene's interpretation.
4. Exposition: Documentaries include voiceovers, commentary, and narration to make sure that viewers are understanding the preferred/dominant reading (Stuart Hall).
5. Observation: consist of the subject matter film.
Additionally, this is my research on how to actually record a sound and this has helped me to not make a mistake on my project during our progress.
Self reflection: Doing research for my crime documentary opening was fun however also tiresome as this is taking along time to do particularly we need to really pay attention on the little details such as how these technical elements create the conventions of a crime documentary. Despite of that, these research has helped me a lot to give me a bigger picture on how I want to make my crime documentary to look like and what feelings I wanted my audiences to feel when they are watching. I also understand more deeply on how audiences encode the messages that the media trying to tell through the technical elements and with this I learned how to make it as real and natural as possible so that my documentary would look professional and trustable.

Self Reflection: Working with my close mates really affected my performance and the process of creating the project since we are very flexible and knows each other weaknesses and strengths. We also separate our jobs and divide our tasks equally so that everyone can work on what they are good at. For example Chelsea and Audrey has great drawing skills so they both are in charged with the storyboard while me and Rara are more into the critical thinking and analyzing so we are in charged of the statement of intent and location scout. Moreover, it also makes it easier to communicate and us sharing in a comfortable environment this makes the work itself becomes more enjoyable thus reduces stress especially dealing with deadlines, leading to efficient collaboration.

- Learned: Today I analyzed bunch of crime documentaries and it made me realized on what are the documentary conventions such as dim lighting for the mise-en-scene, ND sound of voice calls to the police, high angle to show vulnerability and mare more.

- Reflection: I feel super excited on starting this project even from the brainstorming of the crime documentary conventions and how it affects the audiences I feel like it is very engaging and this will be a fun project to make.
Week 3:
- Learned: Misinformation and disinformation, media regulations specifically the app TikTok in China that is called 'Douyin' and how is it different in the rest of the countries.
- To do lists: Statement of Intent for my project.
- Reflection: I really enjoyed learning about misinformation and disinformation as I think it is very relevance to everyday life and we should be careful on everything we see online and check whether the information that is spread is credible or not.
Week 4:
- Learned: New theories such as the David Gauntllet theories, how media represents
- To do lists: Finishing up script, location scout and risk assessment for my projects.
- Reflection: I had a great time with learning about misinformation and disinformation as I think it is very relevance to everyday life and we should be careful on everything we see online and check whether the information that is spread is credible or not.
Week 5:
- Learned: This week I analyses Indonesian documentary that was on Netflix, this has helped me to identify the selective construction of a media and if media represents people fully. Moreover, I did my shooting schedule in a website called "Jotform".
- To do lists: Scene 1 shooting, recording audio,
- Reflection: I am very excited and enthusiastic for hooting our scene with the casts.
Week 6:
- Learned: We started to shoot for the next scenes this week at the beach and I learned that it is essential to provide microphone or earphones to record the audio in order for the voice to be heard clearly.
- To do lists: Finish statement of intent and location scout
- Reflection: This week is very hectic especially to balanced out my priorities between the project and also multiple assessment from other subjects therefore I am a bit overwhelmed and demotivated however I am excited to finish my shootings and start to edit.
Week 7:
- Learned: We starts editing and researching and analyzing on the conventions of thumbnails of crime documentaries.
- To do lists: Editing, team photos, research and development.
- Reflection: This weeks feels very hectic especially there are lots of assessment from other subject as well and that leaves me not enough time to revise and be focused on my media project, however
Self reflection: Writing this weekly progress and plan has helped me on managing my time effectively especially with writing my to-do lists every week and due to this I become super organized and will not forget the things that I needed to do and also being aware of my responsibilities. I also noticed by making this plan it really improves my focuses on certain tasks and helping me to prioritize the big things thus increasing my motivation as it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I finished certain tasks.
